Bathtub refinishing, without tearing out the tub
Bathtub refinishing runs $500–$800, and tub-and-surround combos run $900–$1,200. The work itself takes a day and the tub stays where it is, so there is no demolition and no plumbing. The new finish carries a written two-year warranty.

Bathtub refinishing we have photographed

Everything the job includes, in the order we do it
- 01
Look at the tub
Chips, cracks, rust spots and old refinishing that is peeling all change the prep. Send a photo with your first message.
- 02
Clean it properly
Soap film, body oil and old caulk come off. The new coating only sticks to a surface that is completely clean.
- 03
Repair chips and cracks
Chips and small cracks are filled and sanded flush so they do not show through the new finish.
- 04
Mask the room
Walls, floor, fixtures and the vanity are covered. The masked tub in our photos is what the room looks like at this stage.
- 05
Prepare the surface
The old glaze is prepared so the new coating can bond to it, then the tub is primed.
- 06
Apply the new finish
The finish coats go on in the same visit, with the room ventilated while we work.
- 07
Same day
Unmask and hand back
Masking comes off, the room is cleaned, and you get the rules for the first days of curing.
Refinishing lives or dies on the cleaning. Most peeling tubs we see were refinished over soap film.

What bathtub refinishing costs
Tub size, the number of chips and cracks, and whether old refinishing has to be stripped set the price inside the range. A surround adds tile or wall panels to the job and is priced as a combo.

Bathtub refinishing runs $500–$800; tub-and-surround combos run $900–$1,200.
Refinish or replace the tub?
If the tub is sound and does not flex or leak, refinishing costs a fraction of replacing it and avoids tearing out tile and plumbing. A tub that is cracked through or moves when you stand in it needs replacing.
How soon can we use the tub?
Not the same day. The finish needs time to cure before it gets wet. We tell you exactly when it is ready when we hand the room back.
Can you change the colour?
Yes, most people go to white, which also makes an older coloured tub look current. Ask at the estimate about other colours.
Does it smell?
The coating has a strong smell while it is applied. The room is ventilated during the work, and the smell fades as it cures. Plan to keep the bathroom door closed and a window open that day.
How do we clean a refinished tub?
Mild soap and a soft cloth. Skip abrasive powders, scouring pads and bath mats with suction cups, which can pull at the finish.
What does the two-year warranty cover?
Peeling, bubbling and flaking of the finish we applied. It does not cover chips from dropped objects or damage from abrasive cleaners.
