Deck repair: boards, railings, stairs and framing
Deck repair runs $500–$4,000. Board and railing work is usually $500–$1,500 and takes 1–3 days; structural repairs to joists, beams and posts go higher. The repair carries a written one-year warranty, and Dmitriy prices it in person for free.

Deck repair we have photographed

Before
After Everything the job includes, in the order we do it
- 01
Find everything that is failing
Boards, railings, stairs, joists, beams, posts and the ledger where the deck meets the house all get checked, not just the spot you called about.
- 02
Show you what we found
You see the soft boards and loose posts yourself, and the estimate lists each repair separately so you can decide what gets done now.
- 03
Take out the damaged wood
Rotten boards and railings come off cleanly, and the framing underneath gets a look while it is open.
- 04
Repair the structure
Cracked or rotten joists are sistered or replaced, and loose posts and connections are fixed before any new boards go down.
- 05
Replace boards and railings
New boards are cut to match the width and spacing of the old ones. Railings are rebuilt solid enough to lean on.
- 06
Stairs and landings
Loose treads, rotten stringers and wobbly stair rails get the same treatment as the deck floor.
- 07
Last day
Clean up
Old lumber and fasteners are hauled away and the yard under the deck is cleared.
- 08
Stain to match, if you want it
New wood looks new next to old. Staining the whole deck afterwards evens it out, and it is quoted as a separate line.
A deck that moves when you walk on it has a framing problem, not a board problem. We look underneath before we price the top.

What deck repair costs
Most repairs land at the low end: a few boards, a section of railing, a stair. The price climbs when the framing underneath is soft. If repairs would cost close to a new deck, Dmitriy will say so and price both.
| Scope | Typical timeline | Starting at |
|---|---|---|
| Boards and railings | 1–3 days | $500 |
| Structural: joists, beams, posts | Quoted on site | $1,500 |
| Staining after the repair | 2–3 days | $3 / sq ft |
| Full deck replacement | 3–6 days | $45 / sq ft |
Board and railing work is usually $500–$1,500; structural repairs run up to $4,000.
Repair or replace: how do we decide?
If the framing is sound and the damage is limited to boards, railings or stairs, repair is almost always cheaper. When joists and posts are rotting in several places, the repairs start costing close to a new deck, and replacing it is the better use of the money.
Can you match our existing boards?
We match the size and spacing. New wood will still look lighter than weathered boards until it greys or is stained, which is why a lot of people stain the whole deck after a repair.
Our railing wobbles. Is that serious?
It can be. A loose railing usually means the post connections have worked loose or the post has rotted at the bottom. It is one of the first things to fix, especially on a raised deck.
Do you repair composite decks?
Yes. The framing under composite boards is wood and wears like any other deck, and railings are often wood too. In our work photos, we built a new railing around an upper-level composite deck.
Do you fix front porches and stairs?
Yes, porches, landings and exterior stairs are priced the same way as deck repair. One of the jobs in our work photos is a front porch landing and steps rebuilt against the house.
Is the repair covered by a warranty?
Yes, one year in writing on the work we did: fasteners, connections and anything we built coming loose or failing. It does not cover wood we did not replace or damage after the job.
