Fence replacement we have photographed

Everything the job includes, in the order we do it
- 01
Walk the line with you
Dmitriy measures the run, notes gates, slopes and corners, and asks about height and style before writing one price.
- 02
Check the line and the rules
You confirm where the property line is. If your neighbourhood has an association, check its fence rules before we build.
- 03
Take down the old fence
Boards, rails and old posts come out and are hauled away. Removal is in the per-foot price.
- 04
Set the posts
Post holes are dug and the posts are set plumb and in line. The posts decide whether the fence is still straight in ten years.
- 05
Rails and boards
Rails go on level or stepped to follow the ground, then the cedar boards, spaced evenly along the whole run.
- 06
Gates
Gates are framed and braced so they hang square, then fitted with hinges and a latch.
- 07
Cap and trim
A cap rail and trim go on top when the style calls for it. They shed water off the board ends.

Clean up and walk it
Offcuts and old lumber leave with us, and we walk the finished fence with you, gates included.
A fence is only as straight as its posts. That part of the job takes the longest and it is the part you cannot see once the boards are on.

What fence replacement costs
Height, style, the number of gates and how hard the ground is to dig move the price inside the range. A straight run on flat ground sits near the low end; slopes, corners and a cap-and-trim style sit higher.

Is taking out the old fence really included?
Yes. Removing the old boards, rails and posts and hauling them away is part of the per-foot price. It is not a separate line on the estimate.
Do I need a permit for a new fence?
It depends on the city and the height. A standard backyard fence often does not need one, but tall fences, fences on a retaining wall and fences near the street on a corner lot can. Check with your city before the estimate so we price the height you are allowed.
Our HOA has fence rules. Can you work with them?
Yes. Get the rules from your association first: most set height, style and sometimes the stain colour. Bring them to the estimate and we will price a fence that fits them.
Should a new cedar fence be stained?
It does not have to be. Untreated cedar weathers to silver-grey. If you want to keep the colour, give the new wood a few weeks to dry and then stain it. Staining is quoted as its own line.
How long does a cedar fence last here?
Posts are what fail first in wet ground, usually right at the soil line. Well-set posts and a fence that sheds water off the tops of the boards last much longer than one with boards sitting in wet soil.
Who deals with the neighbour on a shared fence?
You do, and it is worth doing before the estimate. We need both sides clear on where the line is, who is paying and which side faces out before we take anything down.
