Walk the fence with you
We note the length, the height, which sides get stained and any boards or posts that should be fixed first.

Repairs first
Loose boards and leaning posts are fixed and priced as fence repair before any stain goes on.

Clean
Dirt, mildew and grey weathered fibres come off so the stain soaks into wood instead of sitting on dirt.

Let it dry
The boards dry out after cleaning. Stain goes on dry wood, not the same afternoon it was washed.

Cover what should stay clean
Plants along the fence line, siding, paths and anything on the neighbour's side are covered before we start.

Stain or paint
The stain is worked into the boards, the rails and the end grain along the tops, which is where water gets in.

Walk it with you
We look at the fence together and touch up anything you point at before we leave.
Most of the price is the prep. Stain on a dirty, damp fence looks fine for a month and blotchy after the first winter.

What fence painting & staining costs
Length, height, one side or both, and how weathered the wood is set the price inside the range. A fence that was stained a few years ago costs less than one that has been bare and grey for a decade.

One side or both?
Your side is standard. The neighbour's side needs their agreement and access to their yard. If they are in, staining both sides at once gives the whole fence the same protection.
Can you stain a brand-new cedar fence?
Yes, once it has dried out for a few weeks. Fresh lumber holds moisture and the stain will not soak in properly until it has had time to breathe.
Transparent, semi-transparent or solid?
Transparent shows the most grain and needs recoating soonest. Semi-transparent is the usual middle ground. Solid colour hides mismatched and weathered boards and lasts longest, but it looks more like paint.
Our fence is grey. Can it look like new wood again?
Cleaning takes off a lot of the grey, and a toned stain covers much of the rest. Boards that are cracked or soft will not come back and are better replaced first.
Does our HOA care about fence colour?
Many do. Check your association's rules before choosing a colour, and bring them to the estimate. We stain in whatever colour they approve.
Can you do the deck at the same time?
Yes, and it often makes sense: same prep, same dry spell, one visit. Both go on one estimate as separate lines.
